Guitar recorder: loop, slow down and see the chords

Record an idea before you forget it, or record yourself to hear what your playing really sounds like. FRET’s recorder is free; its take tools — A–B loop, slow-down that keeps the pitch, and chord detection — turn any recording into a practice tool.

Coming soon to iPhone

How it works

  1. RecordTap record and play. Takes are saved on your iPhone with their length and date.
  2. Open a takeTurn on the A–B loop to repeat a section and slow it to 90%, 75% or 50% — with keep-pitch on, the pitch stays the same.
  3. See the chordsFRET analyses the take and shows the chords it hears along the timeline.

Free: a recorder built for guitarists

  • One tap to record, straight into a list of numbered takes you can play back or delete.
  • Takes stay on your phone. Audio is never uploaded unless you sign in and turn on recording backup (Pro).
  • Instant playback to check timing and tone right after you play.

Recording yourself is one of the most effective practice habits there is: you hear rushing, buzzing notes and uneven strumming that you don’t notice while you play. The practice routine guide suggests recording one minute a week.

Pro take tools

A–B loop

Turn on the loop and a section of the take repeats seamlessly while you play along — ideal for a phrase you keep fumbling or a bar where your changes fall apart.

Slow down, keep the pitch

Play the take at 90%, 75% or 50% speed. With keep-pitch on, the pitch doesn’t drop, so you can play along in tune with your guitar. Speed it back up step by step as the passage gets comfortable — the same idea as a metronome speed trainer.

Chord detection

FRET analyses the take and marks the chords it hears on the timeline. Use it to write down a progression you improvised, or to check what you played against what you meant to play. For live chord naming, the free chord recognizer listens in real time.

Learning a riff by ear? Record it from a speaker (or record yourself playing along), loop it, slow it to 75%, and find the notes one by one. The ear training guide walks through the method.

Backup to your account (Pro)

Sign in and switch on recording backup to keep every take safe in a private folder in your account. Takes download on demand on your other devices, and deleting your account deletes them too.
