Fretboard notes trainer: find every note, fast
A quick game that does what flashcards can’t: FRET names a note, you find every place it lives on the neck up to the 12th fret, against the clock. Two minutes a day and the fretboard stops being a mystery.
How it works
- Get a noteFRET picks a note — say G — and starts the clock.
- Tap every oneFind each G on all six strings, up to the 12th fret. Correct taps light up.
- Beat your timeWhen you’ve found them all, your time is saved. Aim for under 30 seconds.
Why “find every” beats memorising lists
Most fretboard methods ask you to recite notes string by string. That’s slow and doesn’t match how you play. “Find every G” trains what you actually need: seeing a note’s positions across the neck, using octave shapes and landmarks, the way you would to play a barre chord or move a scale. It’s the drill at the heart of the four-week plan in learn the fretboard.
What it trains
- Root notes for chords. Barre chords are named by the note on the 6th or 5th string — find it instantly and you can play any major or minor chord.
- Scales in any key. Starting a scale means finding its root; the game makes that automatic.
- Octave shapes. You’ll start jumping between positions with the two-strings-two-frets shape without thinking about it.
- Speed under pressure. The clock makes recall quicker, which is what you need while playing.
How to practise with it
- One round a day. Two minutes is plenty; daily beats long.
- Say the note out loud every time you tap it — it doubles the memory effect.
- Rotate notes. Natural notes first (C, D, E, F, G, A, B), then sharps and flats.
- Combine with ear work. In FRET’s “Ear & fretboard” practice routine, a fretboard round follows an interval quiz.
Target times: under a minute is a good start; under 30 seconds means you really know that note; under 20 is excellent.
Left-handed?
The notes don’t change for left-handed players — a G is a G on any guitar — so the game works for everyone. FRET’s left-handed setting also mirrors the chord diagrams and scale views elsewhere in the app.
