Privacy Policy
Effective 3 November 2026
Who we are
FRET (“the app”) and this website are provided by TBD, TBD (“we”, “us”). We are the controller of the personal data described here. Questions or requests: privacy@getfret.app.
What the app does with your data
On your iPhone
- Microphone. The tuner, strobe tuner, chord recognizer and practice tuning step analyse sound in real time on your device. This audio is not stored and not sent anywhere. The app only listens after you allow microphone access, and only while one of those tools is open.
- Recordings. When you press record, the take is saved as an audio file on your iPhone. It stays there until you delete it or the app — unless you back it up to your account (see below).
- Settings and practice history (tunings, tempo, streaks, session summaries, exercise scores) are stored on your iPhone.
Install ID and app usage
When the app opens, it contacts our server with a random identifier created when you install FRET (not your Apple advertising identifier and not linked to other apps), together with the app version, iOS version, device model, language, time zone and whether you have FRET Pro. We use it to:
- deliver the reminders and in-app messages that apply to you (for example, in your language);
- apply access settings to your install (for example, granting Pro for support reasons, or blocking abuse);
- count active installs and understand which features are used, so we can fix problems and improve FRET.
Usage events. The app records simple events such as “app opened”, “tool opened”, “practice session finished” (with its length and routine) and “upgrade screen shown”. Events never contain audio, recordings or what you typed. You can turn usage events off any time in the app: You → Settings → Share anonymous usage data. The install ID is still used for reminders and in-app messages.
If you are signed in, the install ID and its events are linked to your account. We do not use them for advertising or share them with data brokers.
Notifications and in-app messages
- Reminders. FRET may remind you to practise when you haven’t opened it for a while (for example, after 24 hours), and about your trial or string changes. These are scheduled on your iPhone; we choose the wording and timing.
- Push notifications. If you allow notifications, iOS gives the app a push token, which we store with your install ID so we can send occasional news or practice nudges through Expo’s push service and Apple. We send only messages about FRET.
- In-app messages. News and tips may appear on the Home screen and in the Inbox.
Turn notifications off any time in iOS Settings → FRET → Notifications, or in the app under You → Settings → Notifications.
If you create an account (optional)
An account lets you back up and sync your practice across devices. If you choose to create one, we process:
- Account details: your email address, a user ID, and — if you sign in with Apple or Google — the name and email address those services share with us. With Sign in with Apple you can hide your real email address.
- Practice data you sync: settings, practice history, streaks and session summaries.
- Recordings you back up (FRET Pro): the audio files you choose to back up, with their names, length and dates. They are stored privately; only your account can read them.
We use this data only to provide the account features: sign-in, backup, sync and restoring your data on another device.
Purchases
Subscriptions and the lifetime purchase are processed by Apple. We never receive your payment card details. To know whether you have FRET Pro, the app uses RevenueCat, which receives an anonymous app user ID (or your account ID if you are signed in), your purchase and subscription history, and basic device information such as model, iOS version, country and app version.
Diagnostics
The app does not include advertising SDKs or third-party analytics SDKs. Apple may share anonymous crash reports and usage statistics with us if you turned on “Share with App Developers” in iOS Settings.
Who at FRET can see it
Only the people who run FRET, through a password-protected admin tool, can see install records, usage events, account email addresses and subscription status — to provide support, send notifications and keep the service running. We cannot listen to backed-up recordings through that tool.
This website
This website does not use cookies, analytics or tracking. It is hosted by Vercel, which processes your IP address and basic request data in server logs to deliver and secure the site.
Legal bases (EEA and UK)
- Contract — to provide the app, your account, sync, backup and FRET Pro.
- Consent — for microphone access and push notifications, which you can withdraw any time in iOS Settings → FRET.
- Legitimate interests — to keep the service secure, count installs, understand feature use and fix problems (usage events, which you can switch off), and to send reminders and in-app messages about FRET.
- Legal obligation — to keep purchase records required by tax law.
Who we share data with
We share personal data only with the service providers below, who process it on our behalf to run FRET. Each is bound by contract or its terms to protect it to at least the standard described in this policy, and to use it only to provide its service to us.
| Provider | Purpose | Data |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Our server and database: install records, usage events, notification settings, accounts, sync and recording backup | Install ID and device details, usage events, push token, account details, synced data, backed-up recordings |
| Expo (650 Industries) | Delivering push notifications | Push token and the notification’s content |
| Apple | App distribution, payments, push delivery, Sign in with Apple | Purchase and sign-in details, push token |
| RevenueCat | Checking your subscription status | App user ID, purchase history, device information |
| Google sign-in — only if you use it | Sign-in details | |
| Vercel | Hosting this website and our admin tool | IP address and request logs |
Some providers may process data outside your country, including in the United States. Where required, transfers are protected by Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent safeguard. We never sell personal data or share it for advertising, and we don’t track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
How long we keep data
- On-device data stays on your iPhone until you delete it or the app.
- Usage events are deleted automatically after 13 months.
- Install records (install ID, device details, push token) are kept until you ask us to delete them; the push token is removed when you turn notifications off or it stops working.
- Account data and backed-up recordings are kept while your account exists. When you delete your account they are deleted within 30 days, and removed from backups within a further 30 days.
- Purchase records are kept by Apple and RevenueCat for as long as the law requires (for example, for tax).
Deleting your data and withdrawing consent
- Microphone: turn it off in iOS Settings → FRET → Microphone. The tuner then uses a clearly labelled demo signal.
- Notifications: turn them off in iOS Settings → FRET → Notifications or in the app under You → Settings → Notifications.
- Usage events: switch off You → Settings → Share anonymous usage data.
- On-device data: delete recordings in the app, or delete the app to remove everything.
- Your account: in the app, go to You → Settings → Account → Delete account. This deletes your account, synced data and backed-up recordings. You can also email privacy@getfret.app from your account’s email address. See Delete your account.
- Install records without an account: email privacy@getfret.app with the install ID shown in You → Settings → About, and we’ll delete it and its events.
- Subscriptions are managed by Apple; deleting your account does not cancel one. Cancel in Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, UK GDPR or California law), you can ask to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your personal data, to object to or restrict its processing, and to withdraw consent. Email privacy@getfret.app and we will reply within 30 days. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
FRET is suitable for all ages and works without an account. To create an account you must be at least 13 (or the minimum age of digital consent where you live, such as 16 in some EU countries), or have permission from a parent or guardian. We don’t knowingly collect personal data from children below that age; if you believe we have, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
Data in transit is encrypted with TLS. Account data is stored by Supabase with access rules so that each user can only read their own data; install records and usage events can only be read by our server and admin tool.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update this page and its effective date. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app before it applies.
